Services Engr.Qatar PetroleumPresenter BackgroundThe presenter is a Professional Mechanical Engineer with field of expertise in design applications of HVAC systems and other mechanical Building Services systems for offshore and onshore Oil & Gas Projects. He has been engaged for almost 10 years in Qatar Petroleum as Senior Mechanical Building Services Engineer, a TA3 (Technical Authority) engineer.He was involved for 3 ½ years in Saudi Aramco in Utilities Department in Dhahran, Kingdom of SaudiArabia as Senior HVAC Specialist.The ReportCooling and ventilation of battery room(s) for the UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) of any Substation building tends to be costly if the rationale for ventilation compliance is based upon the old standard for ventilating classified hazardous areas which is 12 Air Change per Hour (ACH). The figure (12 ACH) was considered to be a generic ventilation requirements of any classified hazardousareas or enclosures stated in most Company Corporate Philosophy and International Design Engineering Practices, Standards and Codes. Indoor cooling system is required within the battery room in order to maintain the life cycle of the battery itself at a stated design indoor operating temperature by battery manufacturer regardless of the battery type such as vented nickel cadmium or vented lead acid or sealed type such as ValveRegulated Lead Acid (VRLA) and others. Battery room cooling also effectively resolves the catastrophic results of ‘thermal runaway’ of any battery system.This report is presented to rule out or supersede the rule of thumb of 12 ACH for any battery room mechanical ventilation which influences the size of the cooling apparatus. In order to optimize the cooling and ventilation energy consumption within any battery room, the application of IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) normative IEC 62485-2 is suggested for project costoptimization purposes. Apart from that, the report will cover the utilization of strategic method on how the Battery room HVAC system will successfully work with full compliance to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) design requirements. The report will present the various ventilation and cooling requirements during float charge and boost charge of the battery utilities serving the UPS system of any industrial or commercial applications including the control interfacings with the Fire & Gas control system or Fire Alarm System. Design optimization includes the reliability of a single, duty only AC unit strategically designed to avoid failure of cooling for longer period of time during run down scenario.
